“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets”” Matthew 22:37-40 NKJV.
Its important to notice that the word “neighbor” is used instead of “brother” or “sister”. This is important because it alludes to the fact that this love Christ speaks about, should not only be extended to those of similar background or heritage, but even those who are not like us. In the same way that you love those of your household, in the same way you love yourself, in the same way you love Christ, we need to show our neighbors that same love. That is the only way you can place yourself in a better position to keep to the moral law of God. Not through your own doing, but through the empowering of the Holy Spirit. According to this scripture, you can get a sense that it is impossible to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind if you do not or cannot love your neighbor, and the reverse applies. They are one in the same because His love shows no partiality and it compels us. If you do not love God, if you do not love your neighbor, how can you love yourself?
Father, teach me to love as You love, that the love You have placed in my heart may be spread to those around me. Help me Father because alone I cannot live in accordance to Your ways. Amen
